If there is one thing wrong about East Los Angeles or Boyle Heights, it is that there is no American Dream here. Mexican immigrants (and possibly Central Americans) do not move here because they like the United States, revere its culture, or willing to try anything new. Quite the contrary, the American people and Americanism are quite the resented by Latin Americans. The reason why they come here is because of job opportunities, mostly the low-skilled types. These jobs are always available when it is found. As far as people who really apply themselves, the opportunities are nonexistent. If you speak English and show good talent and skill, people move out and the recently arrived immigrants come and move in. Complete brain drain. As far as stereotypes are concerned, nothing comes close.

East Los has been through a lot of change. So if you go back a few decades before the attention of political and social leaders, it was crazy with gangs. But these kids in the video obviously don’t know or are trying to shed another side. I’ve always said” We are a barrio not a ghetto”. We created enough attention that the world looked at us and things began to change. And that doesn’t always happen in other barrios around the country. 2nd street & Marianna Ave!!!

Grew up in ELA in the 60s/70s. I lived across the street from Garfield High School. Back then it was single familes to a home. It was clean and very nice. My mother still resides in ELA and its a shithole now. Multifamilies living in one house with multitude of cars poured onto the street. I can never find street parking. It's so bad I see cars parked hugging the curb. Once upon a time, when you finished high school, got a job or went to college, you moved out and started your own life. Now nobody leaves the house, they have children and over populate and run down a neighborhood. I feel like I'm crossing the border when I go to ELA.

Nice video . Well done. I thought it was a nice place to grow up in. The people are great and friendly. There are some small gang related pockets that gives ELA a bad name that do need to be avoided at night unless you know someone there.

I went to Eastman elementary, Stevenson middle school and Garfield high school. All I can tell you guys is that if you can dream it, is possible to achieve. I'm not getting into detail but contrary to everyone's believe I'm currently leaving the American dream. Who would of thought 25 years ago I would be in this today. I got here because I never stopped working and fighting to make my dream a reality. Good luck guys just know dreams are not impossible to achieve, they are rather easy when you put your mind and soul to it.
